Description:
This school in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood is an addition to an existing preschool building that forms a courtyard in the process. A glassy piece links the two buildings.
The addition is composed of two exterior claddings: oxidized copper with horizontal glazing towards the existing school and tilt-up concrete panels with narrow vertical openings facing the parking lot and other surroundings. The concrete exterior includes cast hebrew letters that break up the expanse of solid wall, while also exploring "the iconographic potential of the concrete panels," according to the architect.
