Architect:

Raimund Abraham

Completion:

2002

Description:

Abraham beat 225 other competitors in the 1992 competition for this 24-story tower on a tiny site in midtown Manhattan. The building's angled front ("The Mask") responds to New York's zoning requirements, while also creating a striking image for the Institution.

The main stair (worth a look from 53rd Street) is placed at the rear of the building, enabling the width of the lot to be used for the various stacked institutional, office, and residential uses. Public access is limited to the lower levels, home to gallery spaces and a cafe.
