Architect:
Allied Works
Completion:
2003
Description:
The second ingredient in the attempt to use arts to reinvigorate an area of downtown St. Louis, CAMSTL relates to the neighboring Ando building without copying. Where Ando used parallel walls to define space, Brad Cloepfil uses perpendicular walls to create both the gallery spaces and the building's structure.
A courtyard is shared with the Pulitzer and Richard Serra's Joe sculpture. Unfortunately this introversion extends to the museum's exterior, forbidding blank walls that only allow access at the corner entry.
