Architect:

Richard Rogers Partnership

Completion:

1986

Description:

Like a Gothic cathedral or an ocean liner, Lloyd's of London's headquarters in the City of London is a massive building that can never be seen in its totality or absorbed in a single view. Instead one sees glimpses of the stainless steel stair towers down one street or the glass exterior walls down another street. It's a building seen in fragments, which is probably best for what is a somewhat busy technological design at odds with its context.

The interior space is a soaring, majestic (again Cathedral-like) banking hall with sizable columns and criss-crossing escalators predominant.
