Architect:
Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA)
Completion:
2003
Description:
Rem Koolhaas and OMA beat four other teams in a competition for IIT's student center, the first new building on campus in roughly 40 years. Their design is an odd compromise between Helmut Jahn and SANAA's glassy minimalism and Peter Eisenman and Zaha Hadid's overt avant-garde designs.
Paths from school buildings on the west to the dormitories and Greek houses on the east create tapering corridors that slash through the building. Numerous colors, finishes, and grade changes characterize the interior, though the most striking aspect of the design is the tube that wraps the elevated tracks above the building's roof. Take the Green Line train to experience it.
