Architect:

Alsop Architects

Completion:

2004

Description:

Affectionately called a tabletop, though un-affectionately called worse, Alsop's over-the-top design (no pun intended) is a colorful and gravity-defying statement for the Ontario College of Art & Design college. Raised on colorful and slanted pilotis above one of the school's existing buildings, this decision was generated by the desire to keep a connection to neighboring Grange Park.

While the exterior of the raised box was originally glass, it was executed in corrugated metal, painted over in a pixelated pattern. A bright-red exit stair stands out, indicating that life-safety concerns were met. While the interior isn't open to the public, the fact that the potential vertigo-inducing effect isn't carried to the interior makes the limited access acceptable.
