Architect:
Jean-Paul Viguier
Completion:
2002
Description:
Probably the most striking tall building constructed in Chicago in its recent building boom, the Sofitel is all about angles. Not only does the typical floor plan taper towards its southeast corner, but as the building rises this corner projects to create a prow-like expression at its peak.
The building's other notable feature is its east elevation, comprised of randomly-composed painted and clear glass. Entry is through a low, curving volume that houses the lobby and a cafe (des architectes, no less). The accessible ground floor also has two bars that are situated on the east to allow for sidewalk tables in warm months.
