Architect:
Rafael Vinoly Architects
Completion:
2004
Description:
The Graduate School of Business's new facilities "grew from the basic recognition that Gothic structural expressions characterize the architecture" of the University of Chicago, according to the architect. But the building's exterior seems to gesture more to the small Robie House that sits just north of the site than the campus.
Inside, the Gothic influence is felt greatly, in the soaring, tree-like structure supporting the glass roof above the main atrium space. While the interior finishes could have been a better fit with the exterior and the "tree canopy", ultimately it does not detract from one of the University's better efforts in its recent building program.
